Spotlight - Sahil Kancherla

Turning Birthdays Into Moments of Joy… For many families facing food insecurity, birthdays can pass without celebration. For Sahil Kancherla, that realisation became the starting point for a project designed to bring joy back into childhood milestones.

A high school student in Texas, Sahil is the founder of Sugar4Smiles, a nonprofit that provides birthday celebration kits for children experiencing food insecurity. Each kit includes cake ingredients, decorations, and supplies so families can create a meaningful celebration even during financially difficult times.

“My name is Sahil and I am a high school student in Texas,” he explains. “I founded Sugar4Smiles to support children experiencing food insecurity by helping them celebrate their birthdays.”

The idea came from recognising a gap in traditional support systems. While many programmes provide essential food assistance, the emotional and social importance of celebration is often overlooked.

“The idea for Sugar4Smiles came from realising that while food insecurity programmes focus on basic needs, moments of joy like birthdays are often overlooked,” Sahil says. “A birthday celebration may seem small, but for many kids it represents feeling seen, valued, and included.”

What began as a simple idea has grown rapidly. Through partnerships with community organisations and volunteers, Sugar4Smiles has distributed thousands of birthday kits and expanded through chapters in multiple states.

For Sahil, the most meaningful part of the work is hearing directly from the families the initiative supports.

“I am most proud of seeing Sugar4Smiles grow from a small idea into a programme that has helped thousands of children celebrate their birthdays,” he says. “Knowing that something as simple as a birthday kit can create a moment of happiness for a child is incredibly rewarding.”

Like many young founders, building credibility was an early challenge.

“As a student starting a nonprofit, it can be difficult to convince organisations and sponsors that the work will be sustainable,” Sahil explains. “Staying focused on the mission and consistently showing impact helped build credibility over time.”

Today, Sahil continues to grow the initiative while connecting with other young leaders through the Global Change Ambassador community.

“Being part of this community means connecting with other young people who are working to make a difference,” he says. “It’s inspiring to see how different ideas and projects around the world are creating change.”

Looking ahead, Sahil hopes to expand the reach of Sugar4Smiles even further.

“My goal is to make sure every child has the opportunity to celebrate their birthday and feel valued, regardless of their circumstances.”

Sahil currently serves as a Global Change Ambassador, following his Global Youth Award win in 2025.
